This sumptuous painting marks the zenith of Cadell’s experimentation with boldly opposing colours; the placidity of the earlier interior scenes is replaced with a dramatic intensity. The effect of the orange-tinged light filtering through the blind onto the dark blue walls is extraordinarily virtuosic. Although the overall feel of the canvas is highly dramatic, with flat, barely perceptible brush stokes, the silverware and gold rimmed tea service arranged on the table, in the foreground, recalls the looser more impressionistic brushwork of earlier paintings by the artist.
