This sumptuous painting marks the zenith of Cadell’s experimentation with boldly opposing colours; the placidity of the earlier interior scenes is replaced with a dramatic intensity. The effect of the orange-tinged light filtering through the blind onto the dark blue walls is extraordinarily virtuosic. The overall feel of the canvas is highly dramatic, with flat, barely perceptible brush stokes. The interior design of the room - showing the strong influence of Japanese design on European fashion and taste - adds to the drama and exoticism of the painting.

This painting expresses the ‘jazz-age’ sensibility of Cadell’s work of the 1920s, the colours employed by the artist are of a heightened intensity, and the flattening of his brushwork expressed in the patterned oriental throw, which cloaks the woman. During the 1920s Cadell’s studio environment was subject to the same change in style. He painted his new studio at 6 Ainslie Place with intense lilac walls, furnishing his new premises in rich jewel tones.

S.J. Peploe, Interior with Japanese Print (c.1919), University of Hull Art Collection. Oil on canvas, 80 x 62.5 cms.
In addition to the Japanese print hanging on the wall, the stack of pictures on the floor include Japanese prints, the orange and green frames suggesting perhaps the Hiroshige paintings that had so inspired Vincent Van Gogh. The fabric on the chair picks up the eastern pattern.
