J.D. Fergusson, Voiles Indiennes, Stirling University.
Oil on cardboard, 65 x 55.5 cms.
Like Matisse, Fergusson was enticed by the style and exoticism of eastern art and culture and the concept of the 'Odalisque' would have appealed strongly to his love of sensuality, music, dance and Bohemian lifestyle. Portraying a semi-clad woman beside a vase of flowers and among floral fabrics also alludes to Fergusson's belief in a vital, feminine creative force in art and nature.
